Donald's Story
Total Assistance: $30,000
Donald was on vacation with his family when his life was changed forever with the crash of a wave. Swimming in the ocean, a strong wave knocked him to the bottom of the sea floor, leaving him paralyzed. Suffering from a C2 incomplete spinal cord injury, Donald began his rehabilitation. After a couple months, he fell ill with ventilator related pneumonia—the first of multiple medical issues he’s fought through in his battle to heal.
As part of the next phase in his treatment, Donald will participate in a clinical trial at Stanford University for Electromyography (EMG), which maps nerve functioning, followed by a consultation for a potential nerve transplant. But finding transportation has been difficult.
Donald and his caretaker had been using a public service, Access Metro, to get to his appointments, but with his weakened immune system, it’s no longer a viable option. Previously a successful photographer, Donald now relies on Social Security Disability for his primary source of income and can’t afford an accessible vehicle to fit his needs. Thanks to your donations, we were able to provide Donald with accessible transportation.
